Speckled Hen Sewing Parties (ages 8 upwards)

At Speckled Hen, we know that inside every child is a budding tailor or seamstress bursting to get out! And we're determined to help them reach their true potential.

Many children have never seen anyone sewing, so it’s a complete education for most of them.

Speckled Hen Sewing Parties take children through the process of making something beautiful and decorated - for example, a scented butterfly to hang in their room. They do it all themselves from start to finish.

We teach them basic hand-sewing skills, such as how to thread a needle, and also how to use a sewing machine.

Each child has something special to take home and show everyone - something for you to keep to remind you and them of their special day.

The equipment is specially selected to be usable by young children. We use darning wool and large needles that little fingers can handle easily, and the sewing machines have needle guards on them.

We also take time to explain what the different sewing tools are and how they are used, and how to use the sewing machine safely. The children work in pairs on the sewing machines, so that one can keep an eye on the other while they are working - and they usually enjoy working as a pair, too.

What the party involves

  • Every child in the group makes something themselves to take home.
  • We go at a controlled pace, giving everyone time to catch up. We work as a group, so no-one feels left out.
  • We explain what each stage is all about, so they learn something about sewing and making things.
  • Each child uses a sewing machine, working in pairs. They learn how to use the machine, including different stitch types and how to sew in straight lines and round corners
  • Finally, the children have their party lunch or tea.
  • Our staff gift-wrap the items to take home - children can help with this, if they want.
